2006 Issues
Fiscal Restraint
Government spending is out of control – bottom line! In the coming months, we will be faced with a choice - continue spending at the same level or make the tough decisions and rein in spending...we can not continue to fund everything because if we do - we won’t be able to support anything. I believe that hard-working Americans know how to spend their money better than the government does. That is why it is important to lower the tax burden on all working Americans and prioritize programs to spend the money you send up wisely.
Immigration Reform
There is no doubt that we need comprehensive illegal immigration reform. However, the debate needs to be split into two separate but equally important issues. First being security and enforcement. We must secure our borders before we begin to address the more complicated issue of what to do with those already living in the U.S. illegally. While they contribute in positive ways to our society, unfortunately because they are here illegally they place burdens on our job market, our educational system and our health care costs…burdens that are shouldered by hard working American taxpayers.
Alternative Energy Solutions
With rising gas prices, the U.S. must start today to implement viable, long term solutions. As the economy continues to grow so will our demands on oil and gas supplies. The US Congress should give coastal states the ability to explore natural gas and oil reserves, as well as responsible drilling in ANWR. However, this is only part of the solution and we must begin to explore alternate fuel sources such as hydrogen, ethanol, and nuclear technologies. It is evident with our strong relationship with the automotive industry, Clemson’s International Center for Automotive Research, the research being done at SRNL, the potential to recycle commercial grade nuclear fuel at SRS, and USC’s expertise with hydrogen fuel cells joining with the experts at the newly opened Center for Hydrogen Research in Aiken are all examples of how the Third District is a driving force behind South Carolina’s leading role in our nation’s energy policies.
Strengthening Families/Constitutional Issues
As a proud father of three, I am a strong advocate for life. We have a responsibility to protect the lives of the unborn. In Congress, I am working with like-minded conservative leaders to strengthen our families and promote life saving alternatives to abortion. I believe that marriage is the sacred bond between a man and a woman. I will continue to support the Marriage Amendment because it is the only way to ensure God’s law is protected under our law.
War on Terrorism
September 11th changed the way Americans live and think. We must continue to take the fight to the terrorists in all parts of the globe or we will fight them on the streets of Washington, D.C. and Aiken, SC. The global war on terrorism will not be short and will not be easy, but with Americans’ resolve and perseverance we will prevail.. Most importantly, whether it is in the halls of Congress or the hallways of our homes, America’s defenders of freedom deserve our unyielding support.
